Overview
We discharge flag state and port state responsibilities in an effective and efficient manner in line with IMO conventions, instruments and codes. We also deal with matters pertaining to maritime search and rescue operations in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Ports and Habours Authority and other relevant agencies. We regulate activities on shipping in the inland waterways to ensure safety of navigation. As part of our safety and health responsibilities, we promptly investigate maritime casualties such as loss of lives resulting from overloading on boats, collision etc and take the appropriate actions. In partnership with other public agencies and institutions, we ensure the prevention of marine source pollution and protection of the marine environment. In addition to general maritime duties, we coordinate all activities relating to seafarers’ registration, training, examination, certification and welfare. We pursue the ratification or accession and implementation of international maritime conventions such as IMO and ILO Conventions in collaboration with other stakeholders. We regulate the activities of Freight Forwarders, Shipping Agents and similar services providers.
