PROFILE OF MR. ISSAKA PETER AZUMA, DIRECTOR GENERAL, GHANA MARITIME AUTHORITY

Humility, dedication and hard work is what makes Mr. Issaka Peter Azuma; Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA).

Mr. Azuma started his basic education at Bawku where he hails from and performed creditably well and later enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to obtain a degree in Geography.

After successfully completing his degree at KNUST, he continued to pursue his Masters Degree in Business Administration and Master of Science in Ports and Shipping Administration.

He holds a Post Graduate certificate in Shipping and Maritime Transport Studies. At the international level, Mr. Azuma has participated actively in several International Maritime conferences including the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

On two occasions he served as the Principal Advisor to the Ministers of Roads and Transport and Harbours and Railways at the 21st and 23rd Sessions of the General Assembly of the IMO in 2001 and 2003 during which Ghana was elected to be of the Governing Council of the IMO.

He has served in many Committees and Boards, including the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), the State Shipping Corporation Board (former Black Star Line Board) and the Ghana Maritime Authority.

In addition to such laurels, he has chaired many Committees such as the National Committee on the International Maritime Traffic Facilitation, and Central Africa commonly known as the Abuja MOU.

Mr. Azuma is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport of the United Kingdom.

Until his appointment as the Director General of the GMA, he was the Shipping Commissioner at the Ministry of Harbours and Railways.
